Its natural behavior for people to discriminate against those who are different. Little kids on the playground do it all the time, and no one taught them to do it. Adults do it very regularly too (race, religion, sexuality, job, status, money, etc).

I think the halo was a mistake though and should be pulled before it causes real problems.

It is, isn't it? I still find it remarkable that such a clear divide formed though. I mean, they all have a common interest in playing the game, they can't see each other and communication is limited to "you suck!" or "noob!". But when Valve tosses those Halos into the mix, it's instant anarchy, followed by the whole community being split into 2 groups.

A slightly worrying insight into human behaviour, but at the same time pretty hilarious to any onlookers.
