Make sure when saving the game. That you not not save while closer than 50km to land or in sight of ships.

I wouldn't settle for a make do installation....I'd follow the advice given by mrchris matey.
Uninstall using the option on the SH3 game disc. Delete the SH3 folder in C\MyDocs. Perform a registry clean and reinstall for a much better gaming experience. SINK EM ALL!! ![]() |

The registry cleaning did the trick
