The ones you guys mention in your manual among other things. FlaK defense doesn't seem to have been a priority for the GWX team ... Considering the other vast improvements and the time they must have consumed I can respect that.

@ Nictalope: good find. I have always been one of the leading proponents of the "nothing but HE" school of thought, based mainly on NJM Campbell's Naval Weapons Of World War Two, which didn't say outright but had the cryptic message "AP and Illuminating for destroyers and minesweepers", which of course lacking other evidence would indicate that u-boats didn't carry them. Which of course would make sense, because a submarine wouldn't have a need for them. But "what makes sense" is often wrong, and so am I. I was surprised earlier to find that US subs carried a variety of shells, and now it looks like the Germans did too. Thanks for that info.

I'm pretty sure that true AP shells didn't come in any size smaller than 8" in the WW2 period, and that "AP" is actually referring to SAP, or 'Common'.

Anyway, the HE came with nose fuze and base fuze,
so the latter would fill the gap for non-armored ships,
exploding somewhat further inside the hull?
According to MJ Whitley's German Destroyers of World War 2 the "based-fuzed HE", or HEmh, as he calls it, was the German designation for what the British called SAP. It was mainly used against light armor, and was expected to penetrate roughly 1/3 of its own diameter, which means a standard u-boat shell would penetrate about 30mm of actual armor. Since destroyers carried exactly no armor and I don't see submarines fighting a light cruiser with the deck gun, I still have to wonder what they would use it for.

I suppose get some penetration through a quite dense metal as a big cargo or tanker engine should be, before explode among all that machine.
I could say is not the same for both sides of the engine get hit from one side HE so the base fuze would do the trick, also mind that delay device were present on fuses varying its, and I have seen several times (in films or whatever) the 6 pounder from a cargo fire back and hit the water, exploding instantly, quite unlike the U-boot which sometimes fired @ waterline, to say, the shell dived and exploded way further on the cargo hull under the waterline, as you are well aware on game

Despite the word "common" or SAP in some places, we must not forget the base-fuze is Spr.gr. Bdz. - Sprenggranate mit Bodenzünder, which is a HE with base-fuze, but still HE.

German documents and books and classified (or ex-classified) intel u.s./u.k. docs seem to me more accurate for specific u-boot data

Cheers

Hi Jimbuna,

I have problem with this mod and SH3 Commander. When I install this mod (JSGME Generic Mod Enabler) and start as normal GWX (without SH3 Commander), all is ok, ammo limits are raised.

But when SH3 is started from SH3 Commander, file basic.cfg (amm mod) is replaced with another version of this file and I have old ammo limits again.

Is it possible force SH3 Commander to use basic.cfg with new ammo limits (eg. copy this file somewhere etc.) ?

Whilst in port, perform a roll back of SH3 Commander, disable the ammo mod via JSGME, load the game and check your ammo amount.

Return to base, perform another rollback of SH3 Commander (better still, set it to 'automatic rollback') and enable the ammo mod via JSGME.
