Pure luck I would say, you've probably hit a fuel bunker or some other 'sweet' spot.

VonDos ships do indeed have renown attached....look in the CFG contained within the Sea folder you will see for example, the USS West Point is worth 870 renown.

lucky or well aimed shot(s) - I have sink SS Burleigh (Large Cargo) with several 105 mm rounds on my last patrol. I was aiming at her fuel tank

It's all about shot placement. I got into a long range gunnery duel with an Flower corvette that came over the horizon at me because I was bored (and mildly retarded at the time), hit the forward gun, she came closer, I shot her below the forward gun mount, which apparently is where the forward magazine is.

This resulted in the Flower turning into a raging inferno of suck, and me shouting "HEILEGE SCHEISSE!" at two in the morning.

yes, it happens sometimes

Quote:
When using the deck gun with the rangefinder in zoom mode in stock Silent Hunter III the deck gun will occasionally fire a round several degrees in azimuth or elevation away from where the previous shell went even in calm seas with no wind. The only way to work around this is to get really close to the target so that these ―wild‖ shots will still hit the target.

Mine does that at times but it is to the left. It gets worse if I leave the gun and come back to it. Bug?

I mentioned this bug before. Jimbuna told me it's mention in the GWX manual under Stock game bugs. And it can to be the left as well.

Yes, it's the right way. The car was named for the original corvette, which was a small fast sailing warship.

I use deck gun a lot but a ore carrier never cost less than 15 shots. You must have met a ship carrying Nitrate minerals.
