I recall them submerging in SH1, but yeah they wouldn't fire torps.

Actually the IJN subs in SH1 DID fire torpedoes at you if you remained on the surface long enough after encountering them.

Yes, they sure did fire torpedoes and submerge. They also sailed alone or in groups of 2 or 3. I remember that after evading a blown attack the best technique was to order my boat to return to their original base course and try to reacquire them on SJ after they thought it was safe enough to surface a few hours and nm later. I really liked sinking SH1 subs. Once I got lucky and targeted and sunk an IJN sub after he submerged and had lowered his scope.

I remember me hitting an IJN sub in SH1. I assumed he would see the torpedo trail and would go for a dive. So I set the running depth to 40ft or something. And guess what ... I hit him right on his way down

I remember encountering a Jap sub in TMO once, it was weird cuz I had a visual but couldn't see it myself also, it kicked my ass....
