That looks like it came from The Xfiles... I forgot the exact name of the episode, but there's one where a chemical agent breaks out on board a submarine and causes the crew to surface through a huge snow-covered ice sheet...

I think the first movie has a scene with a sub like that. Which then starts to submerge while Mulder tries to get onboard and the tower's plane almost cuts his in half.

EDIT: Ow wait, I think it was one of the episodes..

Ice sheets and extreme latitudes'll do that to you. The sun might have been very, very low on the horizon, and the complete lack of obstacle to create shadows, coupled with the reflections from the snow / ice.

Could that "crosshair" thingy be somekind of marker used in navigation exercises under the ice? You know, start here, navigate there and see how close to the mark you can get.

Possibly but who was the guy who went and made the mark? Screw that subfreezing weather to make a mark in the snow.

I think it might be possible since there is a circle made in the middle of the arrows that it perhaps might be a helicopter makeshift landing pad.

What do you think of that notion?

Maybe this is the spot for good ice fishing?

Was thinking "runway" at first for resupply or something. But it's just too narrow.

Maybe a mark of some kind for the helo/airplane circling overhead. So they knew where to wait/point the camera/look?
