Personaly I suspect the author is a bit senile given how he is attaching things together in that letter. It also reads of a half "when i was your age!" and half "damn kids these days!" type letter.

Is this veteran quite sure which side he was fighting on as he seems to be spouting crap that really belongs in some of those 1930s movements .

Assuming he's American, you could argue that his generation did in fact say “hell no, we won’t go." Non-intervention was, after all, a pretty popular policy up until Pearl Harbor.
