Check the display resolutions on the PS3, I'll guess that you have 540p selected. This is fine for PAL region SD TV's but for some reason NTSC TV's have a problem and default to 480p. So it seems that the PS3 is squeezing all the 540p information into the smaller native 480p space, with help from the TV which also has resizing capabilities.

In this case I think it's a limitation on your TV and the PS3 is working as it should be.

What game is it by the way? It may actually be an issue with the games split screen sizing. For example Motor Storm PR has a fixed aspect split screen and it can produce some idiotic stuff.

HD TV's are very cheap these days and you will be amazed at the difference in quality.
