It is possible as long as you keep your speed down as you approach to stop your bow wave being spotted. There are other factors that need to be taken into consideration such as the number of escorts present, is the moon up etc. See this thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=139413 for a screenie I posted sometime ago which shows how close you can get. That was with GWX 2.1 and the 8km atmosphere. Since GWX 3.0 and using the 16km atmosphere I have found night attacks a bit more challenging, having said that, it was later in the war during 1941 which might account for that.
