Well, what you should do depends on if you are running the game vanilla-style or if you have any mods.

With TMO, I think 3/3 ahead is the most fuelefficient speed but with vanilla, 1/3 ahead is the most fuelefficient speed.

I think you can check how far you can go at a certain speed by pressing "Shift+G".

Good luck

If you have TMO, not sure about other mods, you have icons where you can check your fuel range. There are about 3 icons. Just draw a line to your port, then hit the icon that says something "range at this speed." You can adjust speed, but 10knts is usually the best in all cases, run slower or faster and recalculate and you can see how much you lose. Icons also give you end range and time.

Ducimas said this works correctly on ships that are damaged. Also, check to see if you have damage. Many times the engines will run and keep charging. If your batterys are damaged, the engines will keep charging them, even though they won't ever stop charging. Cut the battery charge button off after you get it charged.

I"ve also found you can travel another few hundred miles even when fuel is out.
Worse, if you run out and only a few miles out, submerged you can go 1kt long after battery runs out...make take a long real time.

When dealing with fuel issues in SH4 you do get a sense as to why Robert Fulton's Nautilus came with a sail.

I checked the museum and there is a submarine tender, what i find weird is that if they put that in the game why cant you use it.

They use them. Pull into Johnston Island sometime. No dock. Just a tender....CH

Hi There,
Submarine tenders or depot ships were mobile bases for submarines to use between patrols for accommodation of crews and repair and replenishment of the boats. Ours (UK) only went to sea once ot twice a year to qualify for duty free privileges. Rumour had it that divers had to clear away a mountain of empty cans before they could be moved! If boats were moved to another base, Malta to Alexandria for example, the depot ship would be there to welcome them home. We had several, Forth, Maidstone, Montclare being names that come to mind.
