As for image editing GIMP comes to mind. Completely free. But it may require some study on how to use it. It's on the same level as Photoshop.

Default Gimp

Gimp is basically free PhotoShop. I think it can do anything Photoshop does. It does take some learning, though.

That's weird. The only numbers I have in that file are cursor offsets (coordinates of the cursor point in the image). Nothing that conceivably make lines more darker. Maybe this is an effect of stretching/compressing due to screen resolution.
