A raid devise? was mentioned. What is that?
In a nutshell:
RAID is a card (kinda like a graphic card) you install in an empty slot in your PC. Then you hook up two identical disks to it and start saving your data in one of the drives. If you have the RAID array set to "mirror" (RAID1) all the data on your drive will be mirrored to both of them in a real-time. If your drive goes bad you will always have another (identical) drive with your data left intact.
If you have any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to answer them.

Your motherboard may already support Raid
In which case no need for a card just an extra disk

Usually back my stuff up on an ext drive but looking into setting up a raid array

Have a look thru this may help

http://www.pctechguide.com/tutorials/RAID.htm

Sorry to hear about your woes
