Default help - nasty situation inside!

I've played SH3 years ago, came back to it and... I forgot how to deal with supposedly simple situations like the one below .

Please help. Tips, anything - I would be grateful.

Situation: October 1940, W coast of England. After having 5 ships sunk for about 9,000 tonnage , a destroyer has been on my tail. Well, technically, on my fins = on top of the sub. For ***twenty-four*** hours. I've tried everything: quick changing patterns, staying put (i.e. 0 knots), full flank. Battery is down to 25%. Periscope is gone and busted (don't ask). Torpedoes (if it matters): one left. The only thing that changes due to my tactics is that if I go flank or don't move the destroyer 'shadows' me (i.e. pings me and goes 'across' - I can hear him in the speakers going left to right or right to left) without throwing depth charges. I'm staying at a depth of 42 m. I've tried going to 60 -> "U-Boat destroyed by pressure".

I tried to find a FAQ around here, but no luck.

What to do to get the destroyer crew a good sleep (i.e. heading towards a home port)? They must be awfully tired after hunting me all day and night... not to mention my crew, who is exhausted, angry and nervous.

Help!
