Once they lower their pikes or spears into a combat position they are very slow and unmanouvreable and they eave their flanks exposed. If you can mass against the flank of one the phalanxes and break it then rally your men and attack the next flank and so on and you can roll up the whole line.

Infact thats actally how the Romans learned to deal with the Macedonians in RL. Its a testament to how good RTW is that RL tactics work just as well in the game.

Head to head with a phalanx and you'll find yourself running through the green fields of Elysium 'as quick as boiled asparagus' as the Emperor Augustus used to say!

For RL, they turn those spears way too fast though!
