Default Five Crewmen Die Upon Surfacing. Why?

So, I took a severe beating after attacking a convoy.

My conning tower was destroyed and the hull integrity was in the 60%'s.

The aft crew compartment took some serious damage as well, although it was repairable. The crew compartment was full when the damage occured, but nobody showed up injured. I removed the officer from his berth to move him somewhere else within the sub. Upon trying to send him back to bed, I got the message that the compartment was "destroyed". I couldn't put any officer back in there. I could put enlisted crew in there though.

Anyway, up to that point I only had one crewman seriously injured. He was in the forward tube when it sustained damage. Nobody but him so much as broke a nail.

I finally snuck away from the escorts, surfaced and saved. Immediately upon surfacing I show FIVE dead crewmen, including the watch officer who couldn't be put back to bed. The weird thing is, watch officer was dead in the conning tower, the other enlisted crewmen were in the forward crew compartment. The bridge, although "destoryed" was fully manned, albeit with one dead officer (who, appeared very alive in 3D).

Each time I load the save the same guys show up dead in the same places. So, what happened? Did these guys get the bends or what?
