You might have gotten more exact orders in real life, but just like in real life: if you succeed you get a commendation if you fubar it then its your head.
So, since you pulled it off. Good thinking!  No you wern't wrong. Also, I have just been listening to old radio broadcasts of the Pearl Harbor attack. So I say have at 'em!
