Yes usually I would concerntrate on the convoy and just evade the DD's. However this time things were a bit different. First far shallower water than I prefer to attack in, making evasion very difficult. Secondly the convoy of Liners was constantly getting closer to the UK mainland. I was very worried about aircraft and other re-enforcements. Also they were ploughing along at 15 to 16knts so re-establishing contact was going to be next to impossible.

I managed to position my boat right infront of the convoy and let the first DD pass. Then fired 1 fwd tube at the DD and the 2 stern ones at the first Liner. The DD went down instantly and the Liner was badly crippled. As it slowed it caused the other 3 Liners to concertina together almost like a traffic jam. Then when the other DD's rushed in I used the "Jam" as cover and stayed at periscope depth. By dodging around (and one time under) the Liners I managed to take point blank (under 400 meter) shots at the other 3 DD's with my remaining fwd tubes. I originally thought there were 6 DD's but in the end I only saw 4. Though the game only credited me with 3 of their sinkings.

Once the escorts were out of the picture I surfaced and finished the job on the surface. Surface attack was the only way I could keep up once the "Jam" sorted itself out. Thankfully to large Cunnard Liner only took 1 torp to sink. The standard ones needed 2 each.

I was right to worry about re-enforcements as well. Just after I had fired my final torp another DD appeared from the SE and started firing from long range. I Think he help my cause with the last Liner, as most of his inital barrage hit it instead of U64.
Then I ran away on the surface at first, NE using the Liner as a shield and then dived. Only to 60 meters though as the battle had taken the boat to even shallower waters. Once under crept away in silent running. Kept wiggling as I went, for 2 reasons. 1 to make contact for the DD more difficult and 2 to ensure my hydro guy could hear the Liner when it eventually sank. Wouldn't have wanted to have not got the credit for it.

I would like to say I did this first time, but I died twice before I got it right.
