Do I still get renown if I continue to the previously assigned grid and then to port or is it not counted?

No as far as the game is concerned when you dock to a Milk Cow your patrol finishes. Therefore if you want to get renown for patroling the required grid you have to do it before you dock for fuel and torpedoes.
