Default How to create a DVD-player-compatible DVD

My intention: I want to produce DVDs with slide shows and/or videos that can be watched on every custom standard DVD-player and TV (not on computer systems!), I mean as if I had produced a VHS and then put it into a regular VHS recorder. Videos and slide shows will be created by me, and will be edited and supplemented with music. Think of it as Windows Movie Maker, but with better picture quality. A software in terms of an all-in-one-solution would be preferred. Hyped professional capabilities are not needed. Easy access and handling welcomed.

My questions:

Recommended DVD-burner? I understand that I need to replace my DVD-read-only-drive. I read some customer feedback saying that the guy in question could burn DVDs, but that the device does not read DVDs. I assume that is no feature, but a device of bad quality, then? I read about the Samsung products, 35-40 Euros. Are they okay?

What software do I need? All-in-one solution preferred, slides, video and musical scores cutting&editing. I am not willing to spend much money, so freeware would be preferred if it does the job. However, low and medium prices (not above 60-80 euros) would eventually be okay, too.

Anything else I need to know? And please, keep it simple, I do not want to become a hardcore pro in this, and I know nothing about this matter. It will never be more than a part-time hobby for me - eventually, if it keeps me hooked.

Fraps seems to be quite expensive for what it does. Opinions? Cheaper alternatives?

Thanks.
