LOL, I do not know what it was. Cruising due west along the northernmost edge of AF87 in my trusty type IIA early Sep. 1939. I perform a routine trim dive, cut the engines and stop by the hydrophone room.
I'm getting an unknown contact at about 010 and it sounds like nothing I have heard on a hydrophone before. A very high pitched high frequency whistling/whirring. If it was a prop I'd say it was turning about 18000 rpm! Was able to plot it on the map and after tracking it (sonar man would track it even though it was 'unknown') I give it a course of 160 or so and doing speeds anywhere of 2-4 knots varying. I pull within 1000m of said contact and surface, jump to the bridge and start scanning...nothing at all there. Start running more or less parallel to this anomaly and get myself within 100m of it. Cannot see anything on the surface, periscope depth and listen and this 'thing' is now screaming on the hydrophones and I can tell by its direction it is pretty much all around me now. Quick surface, nothing there. I tried to free view and look around but it was about 0300 and the water was very murky so could not see anything. Gave up the hunt of it. Cant kill what I cannot see. If you guys have stuck dolphins and/or whale sounds in there hats off to you. I just encountered them! If not I have no idea in hell what it was but we are back on patrol and have heard nothing else of the anomaly since. Chuck |
