Patrolling your assigned grid for 24 hours gives you extra renown and so does returning to port. However, remember that the amount of renown you get per ship sunk etc is based on realism. For example, I play on 49% realism and for every 100 of renown scored I get only a proportion of that i.e. 61.75.
