In Germany, the conservatives on national level form a party union, formed by the CDU and the bavarian CSU which in state elections only starts in Bavaria. I read two days ago a recent poll where they counted the CSU out of the union, only the CDU on national elections. Alone, the CDU would be beaten by the AFD by 1 point now, with the AfD then forming the strongest party. The AfD has also recently won its first mayoral seat and its first district administrator post (a mayor with a bit more land on it...) in the East, two small and god-forsaken places nobody ever had heard of. The Berlin parties are now trying tricks to annul the election. Not for the first time. The AfD emerges stronger and can then also play the role of victim. (That this means much is in question, since the SED ("Die Linke") gets split by her fallen superstar Sarah Wageknecht. She is popular with voters of the AfD, and if she continues with her plan to form her own party, she will steal many votes from the AfD - weakening them both. Most votersd of the AfD are no Nazis, but are people who have their noses full of the established parties. They do not vote necessarily for the AfD's policies when giving them their vote, especially not outside Eastern states, but they vote against the established parties. In Italy, Finland, Sweden, and other places, the traditional parties' power erodes everywhere, bringing stricter conservative and right parties to power. And then there is Eastern Europe. --- end of excursion ---
