The architect was Sharoun, and when the hall opened in I think 1965 or 63, it was a sensation, many could first not believe what he planned, and then could not believe that he managed to indeed realise it and deliver evertyhing according to the plans.
Unfortunately, the place the Philharmonie and a smaller secondary concert hall are located, is not that attractive, and a sober looking, boring place, now included in what the Berliners named the "Kulturforum", some modern galleries, the subterranean Nationalgallerie and the tourist trap Potsdamer Platz are nearby. The following video gives an idea of the surroundings and you will agree that it is anything but attractive. The beauty lies well hidden behind the walls.
