Default Why???!!!!!

I just spent three hours sifting through manual TDC jargon and instructions on the forums and printing it all out, then another hour reading through it, then another four hours trying to put it into practice. In the torpedo trainging mission I managed to get my boat into a great firing position and launched my stern torpedo at a Medium Cargo vessel. It was a magnetic Torp and I watched it fly beautifully straight towards the center of the ship in ext 3-d view come right under the precisely calculated spot on the hull I spent hours plotting and then do nothing. **Insert awkward silence here** The draft of the ship was 7.8m accord to the rec man. so I set the depth for roughly 7.5 to compensate for waves(weather was good with calm seas though) just in case. Two Theories:

1) the torp was not deep enough -- should I have set it for 8 or 9 units deep? (Also the dial is in meters in the TDC and not feet Right??)

2) Previously I used Magnetic and set the depth for 5 and it blew every time--is this because there is also an Impact detonator on it as well which was setting it off??

Any suggestions so I can stop biting my arm...?
thx

p.s. the shot was perfect with a 90deg AOB and 500meters range. Oh yea and it couldn't have been a DUD--turned off in realism.
