Starting a new campaign and saw that the grey needles do work. 2 things - I just assumed that since the needles were grey, that they didn't work and I was in single missions getting a feel for the new mod and didn't see any movement of the needles. So big apology! To answer your last question which I just noticed, I'm not at a 100% realism yet. Still luv looking at my U-boot. Yea...I know...but luv the eye candy.
