Need a "how to" reminder please

Good day all!
Returned to SH3 after many absent years and a failed attempt at SH5.
Anyways....about 3 missions in and there are a couple of things I've forgotten how to do.

1. Radio message received.....where can I read these?...driving me nuts!

2. Was there not a thermal layer to hide in?...perhaps its introduced later in the game or I'm thinking of another game.
