VIIC Torpedo Storage

All,
I am about half way through my Revell 1/72 VIIC build and am scratchbuilding the below-deck external torpedo storage cylinders. I have scoured the Internet for good pictures and I have a question about the hatches for those cylinders. It appears that when the tubes were opened up the hatch was completely removed, is that true? I found a single pic that, while it doesn't show it clearly, has what looks like the removed hatch laying on the deck next to the open tube. I certainly could not find a photo that clearly showed the hatch having been swung down after opened.
