I just had such an appalling patrol that writing it up story-form would be grossly embarrassing And uninteresting.
4 periods on station, total time spent in Marshalls about 38 days, not a single ship sighted. Decided the only way to have positive tonnage before returning to base was another visit to Truk, the closest place I knew there was shipping. The swells had to be 8 feet at least, because at 72' of depth the scope was occasionally clear. Heavy fog, visibility less than 300 yards, any "up-scopes" so close drew fire. I launched 20 torpedoes and the only 2 that hit anything were the Cuties. I had 4 premature detonations and no clue what happened to the others, all launched on zero bearing at stationary silhouettes between 600 & 1200 yards. Embarrassing. Does the game weather model Typhoons, or other "extreme" weather? |
