I cant sink?

Hi everyone I am new to the forums! I started playing SH3 this week and I've noticed that every time I have an encounter with a destroyer he throws out depth charges and misses completely. I stayed in a straight line at full speed btw and even increased the time compression. Is the AI stupid or something or is that just the way the game is. I remember when I used to play SH2 it seemed the AI knew where you were and almost always kicked my ass.
