About a year ago, when I found the mods for SH4 and returned to playing subsims, I came across Eric Knepfler's sh4speech. As downloaded, it wasn't perfect - it took about a week of bashing to get it working satisfactorily. Even then, there are things that, because sh4speech is a stand-alone program, it just can't do. But voice command seems a wonderfully immersive addition. I could stand on the bridge of my Gato:
"Captain, smoke on the horizon, bearing 328 degrees." "Helm, come left 32 degrees." "Aye, aye. New course 328 degrees." "Ahead flank!" "Ahead flank, aye." And the boat accelerates and heads for the contact! When I recently picked up SH5, I was pleased to find that it has a fully integrated speech recognition capability. I've used MiTon's fine mod with both New UIs and Magui. It works great right out of the box. But, when I look at the forums, I get the impression that very few people make use of this feature. Am I mistaken? I'd like to hear from others who use or have tried speech recognition. What has your experience been like? And from those who don't, I'd be interested in knowing what your reasons are for not using it. I'm not baiting for a pro-and-con fight. I'd just like to start a dialog and hear what others think. |
