Default Dead in the water

Hello there. First post, so apologies if this has been answered before.

Stock installation of SH4 Gold on Windows 7.

I'm in USS Balao, just got done ransacking a convoy and the escorts weren't happy about it. I dove deep and cut the engines and eventually lost them, but took pretty heavy damage. Engine room flooded completely, and I had to use the emergency blow to keep the boat from going under crush depth.

Anyway, I eventually got everything repaired. I dialed up 1/3 ahead and.... nothing. Surface and submerged, no motion. Same for 2/3 all the way to flank. Examining the damage control panel, I see that two electric motors and two diesel engines are in red, but they don't show up as repairable items in the box below. I tried dragging and dropping them into the box, but no dice.

I'm just a few miles away from a forward base. Surfacing and pressing M to send a message just gets me a "well done, patrol at your discretion" style of message. No way to call for help.

I saved before the convoy, so if I have to I can go back and try something different, but if there's a way to save the mission and get the sub moving again I'd love to be able to do so.

Suggestions? Am I at the mercy of a glitch?
