Default hydrophone help

heya guys... been watching those tutorials for hunting with hydrophone... i got one question as i never found it to be clear...when u draw on the map...the very first thing you do...is it get your heading (say 128 for example) and plot that out with ruler and ehatnot or do you plot a zero degree course first and then mark targets location afterwards? cause i think im screwin something up...cause i been on this mission for a while now... i hear things manually but my soundman never hears anything (thinking hes deaf..or maybe it was the stew) and when i plot out the course and arrive there i never ever see anyone...either the sound has gone altogether or ... they get abducted i guess but in anycase i always wind up where things arent... many thanks guys

also does it matter how deep i am? what speed is recommended for underwater? and do i stay submerged during the day time or combo of submerged and surface? sorry guys im noob here lol

oh and one more thing...when im at say 50M below surface...i ping depth below keel...i get told there is 23M then 2 seconds later i slam into the bottom of the ocean floor?
