Default Battlestar Galactica - I'm positively surprised

German TV has just braodcasted the second half of the pilot for the new remake of the old series. I must say, I am impressed. It reminds me very much of "Space-Above and Beyond". it has left behind the too childish interpretation details of the classical series, it has some ecellent performance by actors (especially Edward James Olmos as Adama is a hit), the story is more complex, the cylons more mysterious, and the overall atmosphere is more threatening and gloomy. I alos like the new design of the space combat scenes, no more star Wars actions, more "realistic" flight and fight models that at least give the impression to have something to do with "correct physcis". That they use cannons and missiles instead of lasers and all fighting takes place in (physically correct) silence was almost enligthening. Pseudo-docu-style...

What I find most facinating is how the changes in character interpretation and story setting turned the Galactice theme into something completely different. Little changes, but overwhelming effect.

To balance my enthusiasm, some of the young figures in the story I find to be filled with too streamlined actors, the typical TV-faces, young, smart-looking, empty faces - mass production, somehow. Apollo for example is played by an actor who does not convince. Too many people simply look too beautiful and too clean - and also act as shallow as that, as if having brought in from some daily soap for teens. The older figures i find to be played by excellent actors.

The reinterpretation of Balthar's role is a big surprise, too.

I'm looking forward to see the series. How many episodes does it have?
