Nope you're reading it right BUT the torpedoes don't, at least in the early war.
They run 10+ feet too deep till about the middle of '43. Not so bad after that.

Any time you shoot a DD set them very shallow 3' or less even later in the war. A good hit on a DD will sink it even if its a shallow hit.

Also till mid '43 the dud rate is unbelievable, magnetic detonators explode prematurely, contacts don't explode at all half of the time and than there is the running too deep thing.

The fixes are; don't use magnetic pistols, use low speed torps and don't shoot with a 90° torpedo impact angle, more like 70°.

Although it's kind of fun to shoot DDs its also a very good way to have a very short career. I avoid DDs at all cost unless the payoff is greater than the risk.
