Since there is no general "Silent Hunter" forum about the series in general, ill just stick this here. Things I have learned from modding, or being a modder as it applies to Silent Hunter on subsim, in no particular order.
- There is always something you don't know, or forgot about. - Someone will always think your work is crap, when you think it's awesome. - Someone will always think your work is awesome, even when you think it's crap. - Someone will always think they know all the facts, and will not quit badgering you until they've proven it somehow. - As a rule, the pubic in general is never happy, nor can they be trusted with anything but the simplest instructions. - Even if you only work with this community on subsim.com, Your work will be end up all over the internet, and translated into 3 different languages. - Working on one small aspect of the game is a lot more fun then working on every aspect of the game. - Working on a small focused mod will almost always yield better results then working on all sorts of things at once. The difference is between perfection of one thing, or getting several things passably well. - Having the overall responsibility of a supermod is an exercise in prioritization and time management. - Never attempt to work on a supermod by yourself. - No matter what you work on, or include in a supermod, someone will always overwrite it with any multitude of other mods and break it somehow. - If someone's game is broken somehow, and if your mod's a supermod underneath it all, the blame, often enough, is automatically assigned to you. - No matter any advise or advisory to the contrary, people are going to do what they're going to do regardless. - Never chide another modders goals or aims for what they want to achieve for their game. - Most of the time, though not all of the time; being helpful, forthcoming, and freely giving is a two way street. - Not everyone who mods, does so for the same reason. - There is no such thing as playing the game just for fun. Your mind always spots flaws and things that need adjustment. - Your never really done. There is always something else you can work on. It never ends. - Whatever good idea you may have, someone, at some time, will always shoot it full of holes. - Whatever good idea you may have genuinely thought up on your own, someone will always claim to have done it first. - Spend the time to write up documentation and you'll find yourself constantly answering questions that you already answered. Do not write any documentation and people will constantly badger and begrudge you for having not done it. Either way, you won't win. That's all I have for now, though i'm sure if i sat here long enough, i could think of more. |
