Experianced Gimper! I need help!

Hi Modders (GIMP users),
I need a step by step procedure on how to load a multiple layer dds file (use a conning tower as example),
Modify the middle layer with freeform initials and change something existing or something like that.
Describe the steps for undoing the layers and after the changes, redo the layering and save as a dds file.
Then show an example of what you did.
This would benefit me and others that are just starting out using GIMP.
