Noob Gimper need help from Experianced Gimper!

Hi Modders (GIMP users),
I've tried to do the following without sucess;

I need a step by step procedure on how to load a multiple layer dds file (use a conning tower as example),
Modify the middle layer with freeform initials and change something existing or something like that.
Describe the steps for re-joining the layers and after the changes, redo the layering and save as a dds file.
Then show an example of what you did.
This would benefit me and others that are just starting out using GIMP.
