how do you edit xxi

i am but a noob so dont crack up on my question.

how do you change the textures of the xxi? I have been able to edit type 2,7, and 9 files found in the tex folder. I tried to change colors on the xxi but it dosent work when i edit the tga file. I looked at some xxi skin mods for direction but they have .dat files and i have no clue how to change it. is there any tutorials?

help a noob?

(what i am trying to do is change the upper hull, flak, and contower to the greenish color of the new israeli dolphin sub)
