New to SHIII

Hi all, I just bought SHIII and came across this site. I'm absolutely hooked to this game, its my first Sim game in years and i've never tried a sub sim before.

Anyways, i'm on my first patrol now, 1939 Flottila 1 and I find i'm having some trouble both tracking and finding targets. I keep going home with 0 tonnage sunk because I simply lose track of them every single time.

My main question is, how does Sonar work exactly? It seems the tutorial skips over this part leaving me puzzled as to how to actually use it. Does it only work underwater? Should I be diving, and does cutting engines help at all?

Any tips appreciated..

Edit: Read the FAQ, guess I know how to use Sonar now. Still any tips are welcome..
