Using the MAP with RUB 1.44 ( Confused new Captain )

I loaded up RUB 1.44, yearning for the realism and improvements promised. I like what I see, but for one thing. When I finally find a ship and go to chart its speed and course, I am confused by what I find on the map screen, or rather lack of. The ship icons on the map disappear as I zoom in the last few levels.

I find to mark and plot a ships position I have to zoom out a few levels in order to see anything on the map but gridlines and compass lines. :hmm: Is this normal?
