Type XXI Sonar question

I know the type XXI has a option when you select the hydrophone/sonar operator then select sonar to get a range to target, but no matter what I try when I select the option it always says no target selected. I am using GWX with OLC's MkIId GUI. I use manual targeting so it would be great if I can get an extra confirmation on range. I know historically the type XXI could get a firing solution just using the sonar. Does anyone know the proper way to use the sonar or at least know how to get range to contact using the option I described? Please clue me in or send me to the thread if this has been covered before.
