I haven't tried it, but I always thought that your current patrol wasn't considered over until you stayed the required time within a close proximity to the assigned spot.
I always did it, and then went hunting. Oh, there's so much more to explore all the time. I really want to get into Tokyo Harbor! Anybody tried that? Mines? Anyway, be more aggressive  !
