I am not going to try and answer all those questions. My advice is to not compare this game to SH3 or 4 but to accept it as a new game.
Next, I advise you to explore the many excellent mods available that, like with the former versions, make SH5 double or triple in value. Finally, read. The questions asked are answered in reading the manual and experimenting with your sub. While sailing to your patrol zone you can try out things. I think the TDC is an option setting in the game. I use the numbered circles myself and not the TDC. Take the time to explore the game before judging it. It is not SH3 but does have some unique possibilities, like scripting, that will give it a good future. I have given up the previous versions to concentrate on #5 even though it isn't everything I'd hoped it would be.
