In a IXC off the coast of Spain in the summer of 1941 I get the call from my lookout. Lo and behold, a fat taskforce sailing fast at 21 knots and I am close enough to set up a quick approach. My last task force was just out of range due to foul weather, but this one I could attack. I sailed surfaced as long as I dared before submerging to periscope depth, going quiet and waiting for them to cross my bow tubes. There were two BB's, Nelson and Rodney, a Dido and Southampton cruisers, escorted by five DD's. I fired two G7E's first at Nelson, then a bit later I fired two G7A's at Rodney. Rodney wasn't hit, but Nelson was and she sank rather quickly. As soon as the last eel cleared my tube I dropped the scope, changed course and dove. Because of the speed of the five escorts they sailed some distance before they could heave around and commence a search. They didn't get a lock on me once and I successfully evaded, to surface and reload after hauling off a safe distance. My patrol continues and I have added several more freighters to my score. I expect I'll be adding the swords to my Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves.
Long live GWX!
