It was weird back in the day when we had E-4 non-NCO (Sr Airman) and E-4 NCO (Sergeant).

NCO's had blue stars in their chevrons, Airman didn't. Was easy enough for me.

The only rank changes that made sense was the change to Master, Senior master, and cheif master sargeants chevrons. Master having one roof top, a chief with 3. That is the only change that ever made sense to me.
