Geographical and meteorological patterns?

So, I had nothing to do and decided to cruise around the world a bit and check out all the new harbors that came with the harbor mod, then it dawned on me; how's terrain actually generated in this game?
Currently I'm too far away at the moment and so far I haven't noticed too many different maritime features, I'll get straight to it; does the Great Barrier Reef exist? If anybody ventured the coast of Australia.

Also the weather system, is it following actual patterns? Do we see more frequent storms around the intertropical convergence zone for example? And does thunderstorms exist? As well as snowfall?
