SHIII in background -- no sound?

Does anyone know why my SHIII stops outputting sound when it is not in the foreground? If I run it windowed or full-screen and switch to another program, SHIII continues to run (time passes, gramophone tracks run out etc) but nothing comes out of my sound card

I'm trying to run TC128 patrols in the background while doing other things, but without it saying "Ship spotted!" or whatever, it isn't too useful
