It's funny your parents think steam is a virus. You should educate them on the matter.
 It doesn't use steam. If it did the Direct2Drive website for the game would say "Uses Steam DRM" Which it doesnt. Also you can set steam to run offline by updating the game 100% and then setting it into offline mode.
