I've always seen grids called out as AM37, or BF27. What is it with the 4 digits?

In RL a further subdivision of the grid was used, to create even smaller areas of operation/location. BF1414 refers, IIRC, to sector 4 in sector 1 of quadrant 14 of grid square BF.
