It was a team effort, by all concerned. If Britain had not held out, there would have been no way for the Americans to enter the ETO. Without this threat from the West, Hitler would have been able to divert the rest of his forces East, against the Russians. If this had happened, it may have resulted in a Soviet defeat, and then history would be very, very different.
